UC Leaders Violate True Parents’ Ideals and Directions?
In November 2010, Rev. Joshua Cotter, the Executive Vice President of the Unification Church in America did a nationwide tour with Tongil Foundation Chairman Kook Jin Moon. Joshua Cotter shared the following presentation entitled ‘A Period of Great Transition in History.’
A Period of Great Transition in History presentationLecture by Rev. Cotter on Chun Hwan Kwak and Hyun Jin Nim
Joshua Cotter Nov 2010 Transcript
A number of interesting points stand out in Joshua’s presentation:“our True Parent’s desire that we understand from the providential point of view, and from their perspective what is currently happening in our movement”
“True Parent’s point of view is that Rev. Kwak’s family and Hyun Jin Nim against their wishes took control of UCI (Unification Church International) and other key areas of the providence, beginning with The Washington Times last year 2009.”
Yet according to Tim Elder, this is not something True Parents actually shared as their perspective.
Tim Elder talks about the origin of Rev. Kwak being Satan
“I don’t think its realistic for us to expect that Father’s going to give us the kind of statement that the people asking this question are looking for.”
The question he is referring to is the origin of the lecture content and what True Parents actually said about Rev. Kwak and Hyun Jin Nim.
“But based on our understanding of the Principle, and based on our observation of what Rev. Kwak has been doing it is very clear that he does stand in the position of Satan…”
In other words, based on the belief and perspective of Tim Elder and others (presumably Kook Jin Nim and Mission Foundation staff), Rev. Kwak is in the position of Satan and seemingly Hyun Jin Nim is in the position of fallen Adam.
Joshua Cotter states:“over the last 18 months or so unprecedented challenges have been taking place in our movement; challenges to True Parents authority, challenges to the very existence of our movement”
Persecution from governments, Christianity, and Communism were major challenges to the very existence of our movement. How does Rev. Kwak and Hyun Jin Nim’s actions threaten the existence of our movement?
Joshua Cotter states:“True Parents have asked first of all our worldwide church leadership to educate our families around the world that sadly Rev. Kwak has betrayed them and has taken Hyun Jin Nim with him.”
and
“we as True Parents children, blessed families, church leaders, and members must speak up about this and testify about what is going on at this final moment of history.”
Did True Parents ever publicize the betrayal of a disciple or a True child before? Is it the true parental heart do such a thing? Both Tim Elder and Peter Kim shared that True Parents desire is not to speak publicly about their children.
Feb 22, 2010; World National Leaders Assembly
“Father and Mother, they don’t want to talk about their children. Just like you, I’m sure most of you are parents of your own too. When your children make small mistakes here and there, do you always want to talk about it in front of your children or in front of other people? No.”
Given that True Parents would not publicly denounce any of their children (or even people like Kim Il Sung who tried to kill Father), would they really ask that church leaders denounce Hyun Jin Nim on their behalf?
Joshua Cotter states:
“Lucifer betrayed God. He coveted the position of God. He thought he could do a better job than God.”
Compare this to what Divine Principle states as the motivation for the fall:
“Lucifer, feeling as though he were receiving less love than he deserved, wanted to grasp the same central position in human society as he enjoyed in the angelic world, as the channel of God’s love. This was why he seduced Eve, and this was the motivation of the spiritual fall.” - Exposition of the Divine Principle, Part I, 2.2.1
Joshua Cotter states:
“Forth, multiplying sin, multiplying the criminal act. And fifth, we can say shifting the blame, blaming everyone else for my own sins and own problems.“
Divine Principle states “Sin can be classified into four kinds.” Not five. Shifting blame is not a sin, but a fallen nature resulting from the forth sin of multiplying evil according to David S.C. Kim. http://www.tparents.org/library/unification/Books/Iphck/Iphck-05b.htm. Being the Executive Vice President of the UC in America, Joshua should know this. Was this inserted to justify labeling Rev. Kwak as the fallen archangel?
Remember, Joshua states:“It is True Parents themselves who have asked that this education be given.”
If this is the case, why does this education contradict fundamental truths that Father fought to learn and share with the world? Considering these basic details were overlooked when preparing this lecture, how accurate is this the rest of this lecture?
Joshua Cotter states:“[Rev. Kwak] has failed to love the true children, including Hyun Jin Nim, as True Parents do.”
How is Rev. Kwak guilty of this? Would this label apply to other leaders and members too?
Joshua Cotter states:“[True Parents] invested so many decades, so much tears and sweat and blood into their disciple Rev. Kwak in the archangel position. And at this time after all they’ve been through they’re undergoing – actually God’s situation, God’s heart at the time of the fall, where Lucifer, his great long time friend and servant, the Archangel turned his back on Him and betrayed him at the last moment of history.”
Joshua implies that not only Rev. Kwak, but in fact all blessed families stand in the position of archangel to the True Children who are in the position of God’s children.
Divine Principle states in Part I 2.2.1:“However, after God created human beings as His children, He loved them many times more than He had ever loved Lucifer, whom He had created as His servant.”
The relationship between God and the Archangel is that of master and servant, while God’s relationship with human beings is that of parent and child. God also loved humans more than the Archangel.
If what Joshua Cotter stated were true, it would imply that the relationship blessed families have with True Parents is that of master and servant, and that True Parents love their own children more than they do blessed families. Yet this isn’t the case as True Parents have always loved blessed family members, including Rev. Kwak, more than their own children.
This is because True Parents view blessed members as their own children along with their physical children. Read Father’s words on attending True Children. http://www.tparents.org/Moon-Books/hc/HC-2-4.htm Hence we call them True Parents, and not True Masters.
Joshua Cotter states:“And at this time after all they’ve been through they’re undergoing – actually God’s situation, God’s heart at the time of the fall, where Lucifer, his great long time friend and servant, the Archangel turned his back on Him and betrayed him at the last moment of history.”
While Rev. Kwak has been Father’s great long time friend, he stands as Father’s child and not as a servant. According to Exposition of Divine Principle, Lucifer is considered to be one of God’s primary servants, but never calls Lucifer God’s friend. Is this Joshua Cotter’s attempt to make Rev. Kwak seem like the Archangel?
Joshua Cotter states:
“Rev Kwak furthermore has been influencing Hyun Jin Nim, the eldest living son of our True Parents on the Earth now, to leave them, to betray them, to leave the family of True Parents and instead become part of the family of Rev. Kwak in the archangel position.”
Does this narrative have any substance, or is it simply another attempt to show how Rev. Kwak is Satan and Hyun Jin Nim is fallen Adam?
Joshua Cotter states:“We can think of this as the last final providence before the establishment of Cheon Il Guk. And what is that? The final providence is that we must protect God and True Parents in their holy and sacred position for eternity, aju? (aju) It is True Parents themselves who have asked that this education be given. Therefore it is my duty and yours to speak out on behalf of True Parents and True Family. As their representatives we, not True Parents but we should be standing on the frontline, as Kook Jin Nim is, as Hyung Jin Nim, and protect our True Parents, do you agree?”
Are God and True Parents concerned about having a holy and sacred position when people around the world are still suffering greatly in the bondage of Satan? Will speaking out and testifying that Hyun Jin Nim is the fallen Adam affirm and protect God and True Parents’ holy and sacred positions? Is this all that is required to usher in a new era known as Cheon Il Guk?
Joshua Cotter states:“Hyung Jin Nim said ‘I choose to serve and follow God and True Parents, not Rev. Kwak. How about you?’”
Hyung Jin Nim could just have easily have said “I choose to serve and follow God and True Parents, not Bo Hi Pak” and all the leaders would have said the same. The implication is that Rev. Kwak is not doing God’s will, but is fallen Lucifer.
Joshua Cotter states:“As Kook Jin Nim would say, there is one unforgivable sin brothers and sisters. God could forgive everything but arrogance, because the sin of arrogance prevents me from coming to God in humility and tears of repentance, and receive His forgiveness. Isn’t it ironic, arrogance is the unforgivable sin and that’s the satanic sin, pride and also leads through that the betrayal of God if we look at the role of the archangel and then the fall of the archangel and the resulting fallen nature we can see clearly what is happening at this time.”
Arrogance is a fallen nature resulting from sin of leaving one’s proper position as David S.C. Kim explains http://www.tparents.org/library/unification/Books/Iphck/Iphck-05b.htm, but is not a sin itself. Furthermore, any fallen nature including arrogance can prevent someone from repenting to God, but since when has God not forgiven anyone in spite of their fallen nature? Why does Joshua Cotter make such a statement?
Read or watch the section starting with “If we look at Rev. Kwak’s actions they speak for themselves.”
Notice many accusations are leveled against Rev. Kwak have no details or substance, like “He has failed to love the true children,” “his arrogance led him to believe that he, not God and True Parents who were in charge, had a better idea who were in the subject position,” “when he was in the position of managing Tongil group, there is extensive documentation that he deceived God and True Parents, he was the cause of many problems that arose in relation to misuse of public money and to the assets of our movement.” These are some of the many accusations made against Rev. Kwak that are liberally shared with no evidence provided. So how do we know any of this is true? This tour was given in November and we have yet to see any extensive documentation released. Its easy to make accusations that you don’t have to support with evidence.
Joshua Cotter states:“If and when [Hyun Jin Nim] returns he will be unable to stand in a public position. He will find himself in the position of the youngest sibling in True Family.”
This raises a number of questions. What does it mean to stand in a public position? Does it mean that you are merely in charge of an organization, or is it indicative of a heart and lifestyle of attending God and True Parents? Don’t God and True Parents want Hyun Jin Nim to possess such a heart and lifestyle? What kind of people is it that God seeks to work through? How did Father get his ‘public position’?
Joshua Cotter states:“So in this situation, what is our mission? All of us are hear because of our True Parents, including the True Family. Our mission as leaders, as members, as children of our True Parents, members of this church, that we should all now take a stand to protect our True Parents, True Family, and our Unification Church, aju?”
“…and it is by coming out and saying this that we can separate ourselves from Satan, and separation from Satan is of course necessary in order to establish a total unity with God and True Parents.”
In essence, by professing this belief that Rev. Kwak is Satan and Hyun Jin Nim is fallen Adam you gain salvation on some level. This sounds similar to the Christian point of view that you are saved only when you believe in Jesus the same way as Christian theologians do. Is that what Father Moon taught us?
Joshua Cotter states:“If you look at the failure of Ham in the providence of restoration, we should not commit the sin of Ham, who attempted to conceal the facts and that he felt shame about the providence. Some people think even many of our leaders believe that keeping silent about all of this is the best way to go, but it is not. It is clearly not True Parents desire. Keeping silent regarding the involvement of a True Children will not resolve this issue and it will not protect our True Parents, True Family, or our movement. Therefore we are speaking out tonight.”
Ham was not ashamed about the providence. He was ashamed about his father’s nakedness, which he tried to conceal. How does Ham’s sin justify attacking Rev. Kwak and Hyun Jin Nim around the world and in public, making a mockery of our True Parents vision and life work?
Joshua states:“So what is this final hour, this final providence for the establishment of Cheon Il Guk? Simply, education from a principled viewpoint centered on our True Parents. And action. Speaking out and standing for and protecting our True Parents.”
That’s it? All we need to do usher in Cheon Il Guk is tell everyone Rev Kwak is Satan and Hyun Jin Nim is fallen Adam and God will then have a substantial nation to work through to solve humanities problems? Really?
When you watch the video, Joshua Cotter’s sermon is very heartfelt and moving. When you think about what he actually said, he contradicts Divine Principle and True Parents ideals and directions again and again for the sake of good propaganda.
